Any of a group of streptococci with no defined Lancefield group antigens

but not Streptococcus pneumoniae.

☆usually α-hemolytic; part of the normal flora of the respiratory tract

but also causing dental caries, bacterial endocarditis,

and other disorders in immunocompromised hosts.
